Tennessee Department of Health Updates the List of Reportable Diagnosis Codes for Drug Overdose Reporting

January 31, 2023

Effective January 2023, the Drug Overdose Reporting (DOR) List of Reportable Diagnosis Codes was expanded in order to capture nonfatal overdose events more accurately across the state and improve surveillance for nonfatal polysubstance overdoses. Facilities will be required to report drug overdoses containing 78 new ICD-10-CM codes under three new categories of substance (cannabis and synthetic cannabinoids, hallucinogens, and unspecified drugs and substances) in addition to the previous reportable overdose codes.

Understanding these changes may take time to implement, Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) is requiring the overdose codes under the three new categories of substance be implemented no later than June 30, 2023. The June 30 submission includes the following dates: Submission Period Start Date 06/25/2023 – Submission Period End Date 07/01/2023. This submission is due on July 4, 2023.

The Department of Health also reminds hospitals of their responsibility to continue reporting drug overdoses to TDH weekly. Hospitals are required to report drug overdoses to TDH regardless of the intent or age of the patient experiencing the overdose.

For more information and to obtain the full list of Reportable Diagnosis Codes see the TDH Drug Overdose Reporting website. The 78 added ICD-10-CM codes are indicated with an asterisk.

The Tennessee Department of Health appreciates its partners continued reporting to the Drug Overdose Reporting system. Any questions about the updated DOR list or submissions should be sent to TDH.Informatics@tn.gov.

Tennessee Department of Health has also updated the Reportable Diseases List, reporting guidance, and reporting form for 2023. Questions related to Reportable Diseases should be sent to CEDS.Informatics@tn.gov.
