Who We Are

WHAT IS HIE?

Health Information Exchange, or HIE, is the electronic movement of health-related information among organizations according to nationally recognized standards. It allows clinical information to move quickly between the various systems used by healthcare providers so that it may be used by a patient’s different providers while maintaining the privacy, security, and accuracy of the information being exchanged.

Health Information Exchanges, or HIEs, such as Tennessee Health Information Exchange (TnHIE) are entities that exist to connect healthcare providers and securely move electronic health records between providers so they have access to patient records quickly and efficiently. HIEs connect clinical providers through a secure, electronic, confidential health information system, ensuring they have access to the right information at the right time. Access to historical clinical information can help providers reduce duplicate tests, improve patient safety, and provide better quality care.

OUR STORY

TnHIE, formerly known as etHIN, is a nonprofit Health Information Exchange founded in 2005 to support the data‑sharing needs of the healthcare community. For more than 14 years, healthcare providers have relied on our robust exchange services to access secure, timely, and trusted health information.

TnHIE provides a secure technology platform that enables seamless exchange of health information across its connected care community. Our solutions replace traditional record‑sharing methods—such as faxing, mailing, couriers, and patient pick‑up—saving time and reducing costs. Authorized providers can access patients’ records from hospitals, practices, and other healthcare organizations in real time. TnHIE operates in full compliance with all state and federal guidelines.

Multiple hospital systems participate in the network, along with numerous physicians’ groups, long term care and skilled nursing facilities, behavioral health providers, labs, and other providers of health care services. View our current Participants here.

WHERE WE ARE

TnHIE, based in Knoxville, Tennessee, makes secure health information exchange available to all members of the healthcare community. The network currently contains over 2 billion clinical records for 3 million patients from all 95 Tennessee counties, as well as individuals from other states who received care from our participants.

Through national networks like eHealth Exchange and Patient Centered Data Home, TnHIE also offers access to patient data from certain other states, supporting continuity of care across state lines.

Darker blue counties on the map indicate 43 counties where TnHIE has the highest concentration of clinical records and participating provider locations. TnHIE continues to expand statewide, bringing secure clinical data exchange to healthcare organizations across Tennessee.
